Social Psychological Factors in Teen and Adult Smoking

(Family Study)

We are doing a research study. A research study is a special way to learn about something. We are doing this research study because we are trying to find out more about teenagers’ beliefs and attitudes about smoking and smoking in families. We would like to ask you to be in this research study.

Why am I being asked to be in this research study?

You are being asked to be in this research study because your mom or dad is also in the study, and the study is about how families talk about and deal with smoking.

What will happen during this research study?

We want to tell you about some things that will happen if you are in the study. This study will take place at your house or anywhere you can use a computer connected to the web. We think it will last for 15 months.

If you want to be in this study, here are the things that we will ask you to do. First you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks about your beliefs and feelings about cigarette smoking, what your parents think about smoking, and your personality. This will take less than one hour. Then you will be asked to take part in 3 web surveys. Survey 1 and survey 2 are 3 months apart. Survey 2 and survey 3 are 12 months apart. For each survey, you will sit at a computer and will be asked to identify words and pictures as fast as possible. You will also be asked questions about smoking. This will take less than 30 minutes. Before the second survey, you will do an activity that involves moving your computer mouse in response to pictures on your computer screen, and you will view a 30 second commercial. You will also be shown some information about smoking to read.

Are there any bad things that might happen during the research study?

Sometimes bad things happen to people who are in research studies. These bad things are called 'risks.' The risks of being in this study might be that some people find out that you are in the study or learn your answers to the questions.

Not all of these things may happen to you. None of them may happen. Things may happen that the researchers don't know about yet. If they do, we will make sure that you get help to deal with anything bad that might happen.

Are there any good things that might happen during the research study?

Sometimes good things happen to people who are in research studies. These good things are called 'benefits.' The benefits of being in this study might be that you feel good about helping us to learn more about smoking. We don't know for sure if you will have any benefits. We hope to learn something that will help other people some day.

Will I get money or payment for being in this research study?

You will get money for being in this research study. You will get $15 for completing the questionnaire, $15 for completing the first web survey, $20 for web survey 2, and $20 for web survey 3.

Who can I ask if I have any questions?

If you have any questions about this study, you can ask your parents or guardians or the researcher. You can call the researcher, Dr. Jon Macy, at (812) 856-0704, or you can e-mail him at jtmacy@indiana.edu.

What if I don’t want to be in the study?

If you don't want to be in this study, you don't have to. It's up to you. If you say you want to be in it and then change your mind, that's OK. All you have to do is tell us that you don't want to be in it anymore. No one will be mad at you or upset with you if you don’t want to be in it.
